I make paper sculptures - layering strips of paper, newspaper or pages from old falling apart books, onto card templates - to create figures I then mount in vintage tins (and sometimes wooden and paper boxes).
I never know how the sculpture will look before I start. It’s a case of trial an error to see what works, although often the tin shape, colour and design will suggest a starting point. This means that each piece is unique.
In the way of folk takes, fables and picture books I use other animals to explore the experience of being a sentient being in the world.
I love the handmade, individual, one off - the scribbles on the ephemera I use for collaging, for instance, or the dints and rust on the tins (although I do treat the tins I use to prevent more rust forming).
I’m influenced by many different artists, such as Joseph Cornell and Hannah Höch, but suspect the main influences I draw on with this work were formed in my childhood, from exposure to the (pretty dark) tales of Beatrix Potter for instance, and the work of Smallfilms - Bagpuss etc.
